2nd-gen Toyota Mirai set to launch in December

The next-gen Toyota Mirai hydrogen-powered car is nearly here: according to the manufacturer, pre-sales in Japan are starting this December, with actual shipments expected towards April 2021.

The Mirai Mk.2 Concept debuted in Tokyo last fall, and the production car looks like its spitting image except for larger side mirrors and an added brake light in the rear bumper.

The interior will also look like its conceptual version did, although a sofa will be replacing the two individual seats at the back row, making it a five-seater. Eight-inch digital dashboard, 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless charger and Toyota Safety Sense are expected to be the main features.

The newcomer utilizes the RWD platform known as GA-L, which in turn is based on the international TNGA chassis. At 4,920 mm long, 1,820 mm wide and 1,500 mm tall, it is 30mm longer, 5mm wider and 35mm less tall than its predecessor.

Nothing is being revealed about the powertrain so far, except that there will be three hydrogen tanks instead of two now. This would enable the Mirai to store up to six kilograms (13.2 lbs) of the condensed gas, translating into a +30% range boost.
