Modern Auto reveals its first production car, and it’s electric

China-based automotive startup Modern Auto was founded two years ago as a dedicated EV designer, and the Modern A hatchback revealed today is going to become its first mass-produced model.

On the outside, the battery-powered hatch looks not unlike the Nissan Leaf (see video). It packs its powertrain, transmission and electronics into a single complex unit named the e-axle. No power numbers are available at the moment, but the company says that it will ship with batteries sized for between 400 and 600 kilometers of NEDC-rated range (248 and 373 miles, respectively).

The LED strip connecting the headlights doesn’t just mimic the manufacturer’s “M” badge, but also scores cute points thanks to its shape resembling cat’s ears.

Inside, the main highlights are a large infotainment panel and a digital dashboard behind it. The steering wheel has two spokes, just as the latest fashion dictates.

Modern Auto has some far-reaching plans, intending to open branch offices in Europe, the United States and Canada as soon as the Modern A hits production.
