Mercedes R-Class new details revealed

A few days ago, we reported that Mercedes was determined to bring the R-Class back to the market in one form or another. Today, it becomes official: the new R-Class represents sporty coupe-shaped EVs rather than luxury MPVs, and the official designation is EQR.

The original idea stems from Mercedes-AMG. Apparently, the team had set out to develop a performance car that would unite the comfort of an MPV with the utility of an SUV and the acceleration of a sports coupe. They went with “GLR” at first, but later decided that “Mercedes-AMG EQR” sounded better.

According to preliminary estimations, the car should hit the market equipped with triple electric motors rated at 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) each, as well as a capacious 125-kWh traction battery. The last remaining 20 kilowatt-hours will be available only in emergencies, though. The total output of the system will thus amount to 1,020 PS (1,006 hp / 750 kW). Interestingly enough, the company plans to develop a dedicated EV platform for the model.

No pics have been provided so far, but you may peek inside our gallery and watch the video to refresh what the original Mercedes R-Class minivan looked like.
