Rumor: Honda thinking about bringing back the S2000, again

The Forbes Magazine claims that Honda may unveil the next generation of the S2000 RWD roadster model in 2024, when the iconic vehicle will celebrate its 25th birthday.

No further details are provided, except that the new car will likely have the same proportions as the old one, come with new equipment and tech, and weigh in at under 1,360 kg (3,000 lbs) thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum. The original S2000 weighed less than 1,299 kg (2,864 lbs).

Rumor has it that the iconic naturally aspirated engine will make room for the turbocharged mill of the modern Honda Civic Type R VTEC Turbo. This one is originally rated at 320 PS (316 hp / 235 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, but the S2000 may get it boosted to 350 PS (345 hp / 257 kW).

However it may be, roadster fans should probably hold their emotions for now. Rumors that the S2000 would be resurrected as a hybrid capable of making 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds first spread six years ago – and were proven false. The launch had been expected in 2017, but it never happened.

At the last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Honda showcased a unique S2000 20th Anniversary Prototype, which you can see in the attached video. The car was based on the original production vehicle issued in 2009 and had a plethora of improvements, such as revised suspension, a new front bumper, and a high-end audio system.
