Mercedes confirms four cylinders at most for the next-gen GLC

The current (X 253) Mercedes-Benz GLC comes with a wide array of powertrains to suit every taste, including 2.0L 4-cylinders, 3.0L six-pots, a 4.0L V8, and two PHEVs. Today, the company announced that only four-pots would make it into the next generation.

Specifically, these are the M 254 gasoline engine and the OM 654 M diesel. Both can be found in the W206 C-Class based on the same MRA 2 platform.

Looking at the C-Class, it seems like there may be various versions rated from 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW) to 265 PS (261 hp / 195 kW). All engines will receive the mandatory mild-hybrid add-on known as the EQ Boost, which will assist them with 20 PS (20 hp / 15 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) whenever fast acceleration is required. A 9G-Tronic auto gearbox will carry the momentum to the wheels.

Plug-in hybrids may also complement the range later on. Rumors claim we could get as many as three of them, including an AMG-badged one. The purported AMG GLC 63 may inherit the C 63’s turbo four-pot with an electric supercharger, a starter-generator, and a full-fledged electric motor on the rear axle. Such a configuration should give it around 560 PS (552 hp / 412 kW).

Judging by the spy shots, the new car will have the same basic proportions as the old generation, but new headlights and door-mounted side mirrors.

The official premiere of the new GLC is expected in the first half of 2022.
