Used Toyota FJ Cruiser prices soar amidst retro car fad

Hagerty has found that the Toyota FJ Cruiser, which retired seven years ago, has gone up in price on the used car market in the United States. According to the agency, the average weighted price of the SUV has more than doubled since 2019, and even quadrupled for individual rare editions.

A couple of years ago, you could purchase a reasonably well-maintained FJ Cruiser in the States for $14,000 on average. Now, you would need around $30,450 for the same car. Deficit has nothing to do with it, because an online marketplace can expect to sell one or two FJ Cruisers per month now, as opposed to 2-3 per year like before.

Hagerty believes the 2014 Trail Team Ultimate Edition – which is shown in our gallery and the video here – is the single most expensive FJ Cruiser out there right now. Aside from a blue-and-white body, it featured new suspension with Bilstein shocks, off-road-optimized electronics, and additional TRD parts. It had only been in production for one year, justifying its value for collectors. Prices for barely used cars now reach as high as $60,000.

A possible explanation for this upwards trend could lie in a recent market shift towards ‘fashionable’ old cars. This is evident from the prices of other models, such as the even older FJ40 and Ford Bronco, also gaining value on the secondary market.
