Porsche Cayman to transform into an electric supercar

Porsche has started track tests of the Cayman GT4 ePerformance, a battery-powered version of the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport with a Mission R powertrain under the metal. It is too early for the prototypes to shed camo just yet, but the finished supercar is set to debut live at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 23, 2022.

Back when it hit the show spotlight, the Mission R came equipped with dual electric motors rated up to 1,088 PS (1,073 hp / 800 kW). We expect the Cayman to fall short of that power rating, though; something like 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) seems more realistic for a car designed to participate in the 30-minute-long Carrera Cup. Porsche promises that the EV will not be inferior to the current 911 GT3 Cup.

Preserving the 900V electric system of the Mission R will enable the car to replenish its battery array from 5 to 80 percent full in 15 minutes.

The automaker points out that designers had to develop around 6,000 new parts for the car from scratch. This extends to the bodywork as well: the Cayman GT4 ePerformance is 140 mm (5.5 inches) than the Clubsport, partly thanks to its broad 18-inch wheels. The body is made from natural fiber composites.

Later on, the car will lay the foundation of an all-new racing series that Porsche refuses to talk about right now. The company is currently conducting negotiations with racing teams and event organizers on that matter.

Discussions will continue throughout the world presentation tour set to start in late summer. Porsche will be exhibiting its EVs live in countries across Europe, North America and the South Pacific region.
