Drag Race: Mazda MX-5 ‘Miata’ vs. VW Jetta GLI vs. Subaru BRZ

YouTuber Sam CarLegion has an interesting new race for us to enjoy, which pits together three comparable, yet different cars with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Lining up at the start line are a Mazda MX-5 roadster, a Subaru BRZ and a Volkswagen Jetta GLI. Powering the Mazda is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder rated at 182 PS (180 hp / 134 kW) and 204 Nm (150 lb-ft) of torque. A six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels. At just 1,088 kilos (2,400 pounds), the car is by far the lightest of the three.

Next up is a lightly tuned Subaru BRZ, which sends 231 PS (228 hp / 170 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The engine is a 2.4-liter flat-four, and the curb weight hovers close to 1,270 kg (2,800 lbs).

The Jetta GLI is a front-wheel-drive car powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four mill capable of 230 PS (227 hp / 169 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). The transmission is seven-speed DCT, and the weight comes to 1,451 kg (3,200 lbs).
