Reports: Toyota Crown to get a high-end PHEV version

The next generation of the Toyota Crown may get a healthy dose of electrification, MotorTrend reports quoting the Japanese brand’s CEO, Akio Toyoda.

The magazine believes the plug-in hybrid variant of the Crown may end up being the most powerful in its range, but admits that no official data exists to back up this claim.

The Toyota Crown went through a major design transformation this summer when it debuted in as many as four different body styles. However, the manufacturer has only revealed the engine specifications for the crossover sedan so far. That car comes in two mild hybrid flavors – 2.5L naturally aspirated and 2.4L turbo. The former makes 186 PS (183 hp / 137 kW) and the latter 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW). Charging either from external sources is impossible.

The sales are still scheduled for later this fall.
