Lamborghini shows off its next Le Mans racer

Lamborghini has come to this year’s Goodwood show with an endurance racecar prototype named the SC63.

According to CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the SC63 is the most refined track car in the entire history of the Italian brand, despite the fact that strict racing regulations imposed limits on the creative team behind the project. Ligier supplied the custom chassis, but Lamborghini kept making requests regarding suspension and brake settings as the work progressed.

The engineering team managed to perfect the aerodynamic form of the car enough for it to resemble an actual street-going Lambo. Some of the air intakes are obviously Countach-inspired, the wheel arch shape resembles that of the Revuelto, and the Y-shaped lights front and rear are unmistakable. The paint coat was also picked from Lamborghini’s OEM palette and adorned with a pinstripe depicting the Italian flag.

A special 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 was purpose-built for the racecar. The turbochargers were installed away from the cylinder assembly for ease of maintenance, improved cooling and better weight distribution. The engine received a hybrid add-on as it was supposed to in this competition category and was tuned to deliver 680 PS (671 hp / 500 kW) as per the regulations. An Xtrac seven-speed gearbox was also tweaked to deliver a Lamborghini experience.

The prototype is scheduled to hit the racetrack for its first tests in a few months. The racing debut will take place next year. Lamborghini plans to participate in FIA and IMSA, as well as all other major racing events of the world such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring.
