Porsche Macan Electric sales surpass expectations

The interest towards the new Porsche Macan EV has exceeded the German company’s boldest expectations with over 10,000 preorders made in four weeks.

The corresponding statement was made by brand CEO Oliver Blume during an annual press conference dedicated to the financial performance of the company and its future strategy. He emphasized that the customers who ordered the electric Macan had never even seen it in person before committing to the purchase.

He pointed out that the Porsche executives were “dumbfounded” by the sheer number of Macan Electric preorders and is now considering it a sales hit. What makes the situation even more remarkable is that the statistical data gathered so far does not factor in some major markets like China and Japan. With sales in those countries added in, the total might prove even more impressive.

For a bit of perspective, the gas-powered Macan found around 87,000 buyers last year, becoming Porsche’s second most popular vehicle after the Cayenne (88,000 units sold). Its all-electric counterpart costs $15,500 more. In Germany, the Macan EV starts from €84,100 (U.S. $91,800), while the ICE Macan can be obtained from €69,895 ($76,300).

The Stuttgart automaker plans to produce the new Macan at the same factory in Leipzig where its ICE cousin is currently being made. The later will linger in production for a while longer – primarily so that North America, which Porsche considers its largest market, gets ample supply of it – but will disappear from Europe soon due to compliance issues.
