Toyota’s later GR video features McDonald’s, drones, and drifting

Drift Twins is a spectacular short video filmed by Toyota Gazoo Racing in its latest collaboration with the McDonald’s fast-food chain. Starting April 12, Happy Meals in Japan will be sold with a GR Corolla toy inside. The video stars a Corolla just like that, as well as drivers Kalle Rovanperä and Ken Gushi and 1,000 illuminated quadcopters.

The story has drivers performing stunts while unwittingly submitting to someone else’s will. A little boy plays with a couple of toy cars at a McDonald’s, and the cars on the parking lot repeat his every movement.

To draw the boy’s hands in a giant scale, Toyota used a dynamic installation of quadcopters wearing flashlights. The drones also helped create massive billboards and other VFX.

Kenshiro “Ken” Gushi, a professional drift driver who participated in various tournaments in Japan and the United States, has a history of working with Toyota Gazoo Racing. His colleague, Kalle Rovanperä, is first and foremost a rally driver for Toyota, but also experienced in drifting. Last spring, he actually won a Formula Drift stage in Japan.
