Watch Chris Harris test a Porsche 993 restomod built by Tuthill

UK-based firm Tuthill is renowned for its radical approach to classic Porsche restoration: rather than add modern features and creature comforts, it bets everything on minimal weight and high engine RPMs. Popular car reporter Chris Harris recently had a chance to drive one such car – here’s what he learned.

The project car is known as the 993 RSK and weighs only 900 kilos (under 2,000 lbs). It utilizes a 4.0-liter non-turbo flat-six engine with four valves per cylinder. It can rev up to 8,000 RPM and pushes 385 PS (380 hp / 283 kW) to the wheels. Granted, this isn’t as much as the latest Porsche 911 GT3 has under its command, but it also weighs a great deal more.

Other noteworthy upgrades include adjustable shocks, a custom roll bar and Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rubber all around. The steering benefits from an electric assistance system that runs independently of the engine, while carbon-ceramic brakes ensure adequate deceleration.

Watch the full 10-minute-long video to get an idea of what a 1990s-era sports car is capable of on modern roads with just a bit of love invested in it.
