Next-gen BMW X3 shown via official spy photos

BMW has shared some images of a camouflaged X3, likely hinting at a full reveal coming in a few weeks. BMW Blog, which had access to a few pre-production vehicles, says the chassis and the drag are improved despite the body being larger than in the previous generation.

Specifically, we are told that the drag ratio fell from 0.29 to just 0.27, which BMW considers best-in-class. The overall body shape has changed along with numerous details, like the rear spoiler, active grille louvers and undercarriage plates. The wheels now come sized up to 21 inches in diameter and also benefit from drag-reducing modifications.

Moving on to the chassis, the wheel span is wider now and the stabilizers are new. The elastokinetics of all shock absorbers has apparently been improved along with the steering mechanism. BMW claims the car will handle in a sportier fashion now without sacrificing any of the comfort. Adaptive electronic shocks are a paid option.

The ADAS list remains the same, but the next-gen X3 benefits from upgraded cameras and sensors all around. In particular, there is an additional 8MP camera behind the windshield that helps recognize moving objects faster and more reliably.

The reporters from BMW Blog were testing a hybrid X3 and a new M50 spec (basically a renamed M50i). They couldn’t disclose any powertrain specifications but noted that the hybrid had more all-electric range than before. We expect both the hybrid and the new M50 to debut in a few weeks with all the specifications and pricing.
