Nissan Versa leaves United States without a sub-$20k car

The Nissan Versa, alternatively known as Almera or Sunny in some markets, had remained North America’s most affordable sedan until its retirement this month.

In its most basic form bundled with a five-speed manual transmission and a 1.6-liter engine good for 124 PS (122 hp / 91 kW), the Versa started at a low $17,190. This version was ditched in May this year, leaving only the automatic variant on sale at a $2,000 premium. It has now been officially discontinued as well. Nissan suggests looking at other sedan offerings, like the Sentra or the Altima, if this is the body style you are looking for.

With the Versa gone, there are no new light passenger cars starting under $20,000 in the United States anymore. The closest match is the 2026 Hyundai Venue, which has a compact crossover body and a $20,550 starting price. In the four-door segment, Kia’s K4 seems to be the cheapest with an MSRP of $22,190.

The automaker has already confirmed that a new Versa is in the plans, but the details aren’t here yet.
