Back in 1970, Plymouth produced a modest batch of street-legal coupes called the Superbird to homologate its NASCAR race car. One of these radical and eye-catching sports cars has now gone on sale with a replacement engine under the hood and other mods.
Working on the 56-year-old classic, the restorer tore it down to the last panel, replaced all worn-out parts and resprayed the exterior in a bright shade of blue. Wilwood brakes, Control Freaks control arms, coilovers and steering mods were introduced in the suspension department to make the driving experience more modern. In turn, the interior received a complete makeover with new analog dash gauges and a modern audio system disguised as an old radio.
The engine is arguably the highlight of the entire build, because it’s a 7.7-liter Mopar Mega Block. Running without any kind of forced induction, the Hemi-series V8 sends around 610 PS (600 hp / 450 kW) to the rear wheels using a four-speed manual transmission. The mileage is unknown, but the listing claims the car hasn’t been driven much at all since the rebuild.
Volo Cars asks for U.S. $289,995 for the collectible rarity.
