Polestar 1 production cycle ends soon

Volvo has confirmed that the Polestar 1 coupe will soon leave the assembly lines for good. Orders for the last production batch were particularly now, for instance, only 125 units will be shipped to the United States.

The original concept vehicle debuted seven and a half years ago. It was not until 2017 that the company revealed it was going to establish a sub-brand called Polestar for its first EV, and production started in Chengdu, China in 2019. Plans existed for 1,500 total units produced over three years.

How many coupes actually made it to the market remains speculative. It would appear that the car proved even less popular than expected, with sales in Europe in 2020 dropping to just 65 units. Then again, this is hardly surprising, given that the Polestar 1 is both slower and more expensive than the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and the BMW M850i xDrive.

The exotic comes powered by a 2.0-liter gas engine with a mechanical supercharger, two electric motors and a starter-generator. It hits the wheels with 609 PS (601 hp / 448 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque. A 34-kWh lithium-ion battery gives it 150 km (93 miles) of all-electric range.

Features include AWD, carbon body parts, Ohlins CESi adaptive shocks, and Akebono brakes.
