Renault 5 EV bows in Europe

Renault has unveiled an electric hatchback called the 5. It offers up to 400 km (248 miles) per charge and starts from €25,000 in Europe.

The model takes advantage of an innovative platform called AmpR Small. Designed specifically for more compact, less pricey EVs, it features per-wheel suspension as standard. The body is 3.9 meters (12.8 feet) long with 2.54 m (8.33 ft.) between the axles. The interior houses five seats and a 326-liter trunk (11.5 cubic feet). Tipping the scales under 1.5 metric tons (3,300 lbs), the 5 EV can tow trailers weighing up to 500 kg (1,100 lbs).

Technologies called V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) enable using the on-board battery to charge up other EVs or power up your household during a blackout.

Design-wise, the new Renault 5 looks much like its classic predecessor from decades ago. The DRLs were specifically designed to resemble human eyes, and a special display was built into the hood to display the remaining charge.

Inside, the key feature comes in the form of a 10.1-inch infotainment display. The new infotainment system is called OpenR Link and supports a voice assistant named Reno. The system supports Google Services and has access to dozens of apps. The trim all around is eco-friendly, and Renault claims the car itself is 85% recyclable.

The base trim comes loaded with driving assists including even such premium features as adaptive cruise control and Level 2 semi-autonomous driving.
