Jaecoo J5 bows in China

Chery-owned car brand Jaecoo has unveiled a new crossover SUV on its domestic market – the J5.

It looks much like the company’s other creations with an impressively large radiator grille and laconic lines all around. Compared to some of the upmarket SUVs, it actually has a sportier and more dynamic design.

A peek inside reveals a squared-off steering wheel, two wireless charging pads and a 13.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment display. The infotainment system runs on Snapdragon 8155 hardware. The transmission selector now resides on the steering column, freeing up space on the tunnel.

The car measures 4,380 x 1,860 x 1,650 mm (171.1 x 72.7 x 64.5 inches) large with 2,620 mm (102.3 inches) between the axles. The trunk size varies from 480 to 1,180 liters (16.95 – 41.67 cubic feet).

Like many other Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo cars, the new J5 will be powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine rated at 197 PS (194 hp / 145 kW) and 290 Nm (214 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission type is still unknown, but it’s official that AWD will be available in certain trim levels. Those opting for all-wheel drive will get a number of dedicated off-road presets.

An all-electric and a hybrid version of the SUV are coming at a later date, Jaecoo says.
