Smart #2 Concept looks wild heading into production

Mercedes-Benz vehicle sub-brand Smart has brought an all-electric city hatchback called the Number Two (#2) to the Auto China show in Beijing. While technically still a concept, it is expected to make a production debut in Q4 2026.

The new car comes based on Geely’s new ECA platform and spans mere 2,792 millimeters (109.9 inches) long. The powertrain details aren’t there yet, but the company reveals that the range is close to 300 kilometers (186 miles) per charge. Recharging from 10 to 80 percent will take less than 20 minutes, so it shouldn’t be a major issue for city dwellers. Like most modern EVs, the #2 supports power sharing with external appliances.

The exterior of the model pays obvious homage to the iconic two-seater, the Smart ForTwo, while the added 300 mm (nearly a foot) of body length should make it a more comfortable option for the taller passengers. The exterior playfully combines such unexpected tones as baby blue, light cream and pale gold, but we expect the final production version of the microcar to look more utilitarian than that. Still, that fake grille with equally fake straps looks charming in its own silly way, as do customizable pixel LED panels at both ends.

The production-ready Smart #2 is expected to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Europe and China will be its top priority markets.
