Toyota FT-Se confirmed for production, but won’t be coming until 2026

Toyota unveiled the all-electric coupe concept known as FT-Se during this year’s Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, but neglected to comment on its production prospects. This changes now with an official statement from Hideaki Iida, Design Director of the FT-Se project.

According to Iida – who is also one of the leaders of the Gazoo Racing design department – the car will reach production, but not until 2026. It will be powered by the same battery pack as Toyota’s other JMS premiere, the Lexus LF-ZC Concept. The latter has essentially been approved for production already, with the premium automaker saying it will reach the mass market in three years’ time.

Since the LF-ZC has been approved, it is only a matter of time until the FT-Se follows suit, Iida says. The automaker is vividly interested in adding another all-electric sports car to its lineup. In all likelihood, it will be released under Gazoo Racing branding and advertised as the subdivision’s own development. Allegedly, Toyota does not plan to promote it as a successor to the MR-2 – instead, it will be positioned as the main competitor of the all-electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman.
