Toyota has started taking pre-orders for the new Hilux Revo Rocco on its domestic market. Positioned as a more affordable alternative to the GR Sport (see video), it is based on the lower Hilux Z spec and has mostly aesthetic tweaks. The shipments will begin in May next year.
A look at the body reveals a different front bumper, radiator grille with metallic accents, and a redesigned rear bumper. The plastic body kit has been revised, too, and new 18-inch wheels were put inside the arches. The white text on the sidewalls is a homage to the sports cars of the 1970s.
The equipment list mentions a new tailgate lift assist. For the interior, a partial leather trim with an extended suite of driver assists, surround view cameras and an 8-inch infotainment system screen are already included in the standard spec.
The asking price is 4,772,000 Japanese Yen, or $33,600. It uses the standard 2.4-liter diesel engine in tandem with its six-speed automatic transmission, driving the wheels with 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW). The Hilux GR Sport version starts from $40,000 but gets a superior 2.8-liter diesel with more than 220 PS (217 hp / 162 kW).
The Revo Rocco is supposed to keep the Hilux sales lively in Japan even as the more modern Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi L200 eat away at its sales. The next generation is not expected to arrive until another two or three years.
