Toyota joins forces with HKS to release a 700-hp Supra drift car

When Toyota heralded the coming of the revived Supra, many brand fans were openly skeptical about it. Even now that the sports car has been on the market for months, some still begrudge its ‘stale’ overall design and especially the engine, which the company had admittedly borrowed off the BMW shelf. True, the legendary 2JZ-GTE inline-six of the old Supra was peerless in terms of performance and torque at all rev counts.

As it now turns out, Toyota has also been missing the iconic sports car for a while now. Collaborating with Japanese performance parts manufacturer HKS, the company has introduced a unique drift car based on the modern Supra chassis, but armed with an original 2JZ-GTE engine boosted with an HKS GTIII-4R turbocharger. The resulting output amounts to a whopping 700 hp (522 kW) along with 884 Nm (620 lb×ft) of torque.

The unique prototype car also boasts numerous suspension tweaks, Advan wheels, and a few other aftermarket upgrades from HKS.

Toyota will demonstrate the drift ride’s true potential during the Goodwood Festival of Speed opening in the UK on July 4, 2019.
