Volkswagen sorts out the Golf Mk8 software issues

The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf celebrated its premiere last fall, but unexpectedly encountered an issue in its “emergency service call” feature mandatory in the EU. Just as promised, the company was able to resolve the problem before mid-June.

VW had to halt the shipments temporarily to eliminate the software defects in the produced, but not shipped cars. Those who had received their Golfs prior to the announcement are now obligated to visit their nearest dealership for a software update, because the car does not support Tesla-style “on-the-go” system updates.

This means around 15,000 vehicles are being recalled right now. This also explains why the new Skoda Octavia stopped shipping: it had a similar issue in its software.

The eCall emergency call system is deemed mandatory for all light passenger and commercial transports certified in the EU after March 31, 2018. In earlier news, Volkswagen reported numerous software issues in its upcoming ID.3 EV.
