Volkswagen will back out of its decision to use sensor controls on steering wheels, Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed on his social media pages. He added that it was the customers who requested the hardware buttons back.
The first time VW put touch-based controls on a production car was three years ago, with the introduction of the next VW Golf. Per Motor1, the feature was heavily criticized by Golf owners and eventually other VW drivers as well, because the fad began spreading to other models.
Most of the customers complaining about the sensor controls point out that tactile feedback often plays a much more important role while driving than any modern technologies do. Physical buttons are essential when the driver’s undivided attention has to stay on the road.
While not official yet, it was implied that an update would be coming to the Golf lineup next year, bringing the finger-friendly buttons back in production.
