Mk9 VW Golf R rumored to go all-electric and AWD

The Volkswagen Golf is currently underway to its planned refresh, after which a new generation should come around in late 2020s. According to Autocar, it may cease to exist as ‘Golf’ and instead become an all-electric vehicle named the ID.2, marketed just below the ID.3.

The British magazine claims that Volkswagen is currently considering multiple options for the ID.2, including a high-riding crossover variant and a high-performance AWD spec to fill in the gap left by the Golf R. Such a hot electric hatch would have no trouble competing against the likes of the 500e Abarth and the upcoming Alpine R5.

It remains open whether the downsized modification of the VW MEB platform will be adequate for a car as powerful as that, though. At any rate, the standard ID.2 model is expected to reach the market as soon as 2025. A more powerful version of it capable of replacing the current Golf lineup may well take another few years to arrive.
