VW ID. Buzz crash test footage reveals an impressively safe design

Euro NCAP has recently put the Volkswagen ID. Buzz through a collision test and awarded it five stars out of five for overall safety.

The electric minivan scored a remarkable 92% for adult passenger protection, 87% for child safety, and 90% for safety aid performance. It took an alarming nosedive at pedestrian protection, scoring as low as 60%.

The Buzz model tested came equipped with a single electric motor on the rear axle, because it was the only modification available in Europe at the time. It weighed 2,384 kilograms (5,255 lbs) on the curb.

Right now, Volkswagen ships the Buzz with a lithium-ion battery rated at 82 kWh, out of which 77 kWh is available for use. The U.S. spec will be made with a longer wheelbase and therefore a larger traction battery, the manufacturer says.
