BMW X1 debuts with new design features, AWD in all specs

The third-generation BMW X1 combines a refreshed exterior design with innovative technology and xDrive present in all versions.

The basic proportions stay the same, but the front fascia now sports a larger, nearly square dual kidney grille and revised LED headlights. The taillights are also LED-based by default.

The rear window has grown smaller, while the wheel arches have become wider, creating an illusion of a wider car. In reality, the SUV is only around 50 mm (2 inches) longer and 25 mm (1 inch) wider than its predecessor. The drag ratio is rather low at 0.27.

BMW points out that, while there is only enough room inside for five passengers, the added body width provides them with more shoulder and elbow room than before. Even more importantly, the car now comes equipped with the latest BMW iDrive 8 suite that combines a 10.25-inch digital dashboard and a 10.7-inch infotainment system under a single sheet of glass.

Buyers in the USA may only get their X1 with one engine, a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder rates at 241 PS (238 hp / 177 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. This version of the car starts from $38,600 and needs 6.2 seconds for its standard sprint to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).
