Barn-found Chevy truck fetches new Mustang price

Someone has just bought an 18-year-old, dilapidated Chevrolet SSR pickup for U.S. $50,000. The vehicle has stood in the barn for most of its life and never received as much as a wash.

The owner bought the SSR in 2005 and put around 1,500 km (1,000 miles) on it before parking it next to a first-gen Dodge Viper standing in a shed and abandoning it there.

Chevrolet designed the original truck (see video) when there was a growing public interest in retro-style vehicles. The production took place in 2003–2006. A total of 24,150 units was made and 24,112 was sold. A foldable cabin top turned the truck into a roadster of sorts.

In the first two years of production, the SSR came equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine rated at 305 PS (300 hp / 298 kW) in tandem with a four-speed A/T. Later on, the company started offering a 6.0-liter option with 390 PS (385 hp / 297 kW) at the output end and also added six-speed M/T to the list of transmissions. The truck shown here was optioned with the manual box.
