Ferrari 296 GTB spawns a new racing modification

Ferrari has posted the first photos and some specifications of the 296 Challenge, a track-focused version of the road-legal 296 GTB (see video).

Among other things, the car landed with flared fenders and numerous exterior trims – for example, a front splitter on a bulky front bumper and a rear wing. Both parts are adjustable. 19-inch centerlock wheels and special Pirelli tires are included, too.
The manufacturer claims that the new aero kit generates up to 870 kilos (1,918 lbs) of downforce around 250 km/h (155 mph). It is a record-high value for Ferrari cars participating in the company’s single-make championships.

Another record comes in the horsepower-per-cylinder ratio: 234 PS, or 231 hp, or 172 kW. The new 296 GTB continues using the same 3.0-liter V6 block, but sheds the electric motor in favor of a 37-horsepower boost to the main engine. The resulting output is 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque – less than the street-legal version produces, but more than the 296 GT3 racer has. Other notable additions include more powerful brakes and electronic tweaks.

The racecar will make its debut at the Mugello Racetrack during the Finali Mondiali event at the end of this month. The company says it is first and foremost a Challenge Trofeo vehicle, but will nonetheless take part in a number of races in Europe and North America next year. It is also officially viewed as a successor to the 488 Challenge Evo.
