54-year-old Mustang sells for 5x new Mustang price

A rare 1970 Ford Mustang outfitted to the flagship “Boss 429” spec has just gone under the hammer for U.S. $330,000, which is more than five times as much as the modern Mustang Dark Horse costs (from $58,000).

The fastback from a production run of 499 units has been fully restored prior to the auction. The seller points out that the Boss 429 special edition came out in 1969 and 1970 as a homologation special for the NASCAR races of the time. Ford did not envision any other use for this muscle car lineup than perfecting its engine technology of the period.

Unlike its peers, the Boss 429 packed a larger 429-cubic-inch (7-liter) V8 engine officially rated at 375 PS (370 hp / 276 kW). Unofficial measurements suggested that it could actually output more than 500 PS (493 hp / 368 kW). Every such car came equipped with an improved four-speed manual gearbox, a different rear axle, reinforced suspension with added sway bars, disc brakes at the front end and exclusive wheels.

According to the seller, the car was sold “as-new” after a complete restoration. As soon as it caught the attention of collectors, the bidding has skyrocketed from $210,000 to $330,000 in barely more than a minute.
