Honda announces new Insight EV for Japan and China, and it looks familiar

The fourth generation of the Honda Insight is here, looking like a crossover SUV but riding low like a hatchback. A closer glance reveals that it has the same body proportions and trim as the China-only Honda e:NS2.

Unlike the previous three generations, the new Insight is no longer a hybrid. Instead, it relies on a single electric motor to drive its front wheels with 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. The manufacturer reckons that, once fully charged, its nickel-manganese-cobalt battery should be sufficient for 545 kilometers (338 miles) of range.

In Japan where the EV is set to go on sale in a few weeks, it will be available with a 9.4-inch digital dashboard, a 12.8-inch infotainment display and a heads-up display included as standard. Per Honda, drivers can look forward to “unprecedented” levels of comfort owing to an HVAC system that simultaneously adjusts air conditioning, steering wheel heating and seat heating (or ventilation) as necessary. Aside from nailing the temperature, it is said to maintain a constant humidity in the cabin throughout the day.

Later on, a similarly equipped Insight is slated to arrive in China as well – with the steering wheel on the left-hand side, of course. It’s unknown whether any other markets are in the plans.
