Mazda’s Iconic SP Concept is a rotary-electric machine shrouded in mystery

Mazda’s booth at the ongoing auto show in Tokyo features a sleek and stylish concept car called Iconic SP. It is a hybrid of some kind that some of us believe to be the next generation of the MX-5, while others call a revival of the RX-7.

What we know on official terms is that the coupe packs a 1.6-liter rotary engine acting as a generator, while all propulsion is handled by multiple electric motors. The automaker doesn’t specify how many there are, but their combined output is 370 PS (365 hp / 272 kW). As for the combustion engine, it is said to accept various fuel types ranging from conventional gasoline to biofuels and even hydrogen.

The concept is rather small at just 4,180 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,150 mm tall with 2,590 mm of wheelbase. It slots in between the latest MX-5 and the old RX-7 in terms of size.

Mazda has avoided answering whether the Iconic SP may ever get a production run.
