Identity Crisis: Porsche-cosplaying Mazda RX-7 discovers no one wants it

Back in the 1990s, owners of the third-generation Mazda RX-7 (FD) would go all-in on drastically altering its appearance. The JDM kit known as the RE-Amemiya AC987 was particularly popular back then, and an example in orange went up on sale the other day only to step back down without any bids.

The reason? It’s up to interpretation, but we suppose it could have something to do with the fact that there is no RX-7 discernible under all that mascara. The front end is arguably the worst offender with a completely new bumper, radiator grille, hood and – most noticeably – taillights. The Japanese rotary coupe had charming pop-up headlamps that this particular conversion traded for Porsche-like googly eyes. Is it different? Absolutely. Is it good? Eh…

Whoever transformed this RX-7 went the full route, also moving the side mirrors to both sides of the hood, adding side sill extensions and skirts, and overhauling the rear end with a new bumper, taillights and a wing. Custom 17-inch wheels rounded off the project.

The interior seems mostly untouched save for the dashboard, which proudly bears the signature of Keiichi Tsuchiya, who you may have heard being referred to as the Drift King.

Power is still provided by a stock 1.3-liter Wankel engine driven by a pair of serial turbos to output 255 PS (252 hp / 188 kW), or so the listing claims.
