The new McLaren GTS possesses the marque’s signature dynamics and handling, but benefits from improved ergonomics and long-range comfort, making it suitable for everyday driving, the British automaker claims. Positioned as a successor to the GT model introduced four years ago, it is a lighter, faster and more powerful vehicle.
Like its predecessor, the GTS comes based on the company’s proprietary Monocell II-T monocoque fabricated from aluminum and carbon fiber. The suspension features a double-wishbone design at both axles and adaptive shocks all around. The curb weight has dropped by 10 kilos (22 pounds) to 1,456 kg (3,210 lbs) despite added noise proofing.
The old 4.0-liter V8 linked to a seven-speed DCT still toils under the hood, producing 635 PS (626 hp / 467 kW) and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque. The GT model had 620 PS (612 hp / 456 kW) at the crank, but the same torque. The sprint time and top speed stay the same at 3.2 seconds and 326 km/h (202 mph) respectively. Having said that, the new GTS needs 8.9 seconds to hit 200 km/h (124 mph) – that’s a whole second faster than the GT.
The owners will know to appreciate the fact that the front suspension lift now activates much faster for driving over those speed bumps – it takes four seconds to raise the front end and the same time to drop it back. There are also three drive modes on offer, called Sport, Track and Comfort. The latter muffles the exhaust tune more than the other two.
The McLaren GTS has two trunks: 150 liters (5.3 cubic feet) at the front and 420 l (14.8 cu. ft.) at the back near the engine.
An electrochromic roof with adjustable opacity, a high-end multimedia system with a 7-inch display, ultra-comfortable seats and a 12-channel Bowers&Wilkins audio system are all listed under paid options. The buyers will also be offered a wide range of custom trim bits and other individualization opportunities.
