McLaren P1 to get an unofficial Spyder version

McLaren finished the production of its part-electric P1 supercar seven years ago, but Lanzante seems determined to revive the series by converting five coupes into open-top Spyder cars.

According to TopGear, the UK-based tuner plans to make five only examples. The pricing has not been revealed yet.

Characteristic twin ‘humps’ made from carbon fiber and found behind the seats will be the most noticeable exterior trait of the build. These humps will act as air intakes, compensating for the inevitable deletion of OEM intakes during the conversion.

Removable carbon-fiber top panels will be provided for rainy days, and the front fenders and doors will be redesigned slightly to keep the Spyder’s shape as close to that of the original coupe as possible.

The lack of a fixed top will also necessitate rebuilding the lower body of the car with sufficient reinforcements. The cabin will be re-trimmed with a state-of-the-art material particularly resistant to the ultraviolet of the Sun.

Paul House, one of the creators of the original McLaren P1, takes part in the project. For its own part, Lanzante helped the British sports car maker design special editions of the P1.

The powertrain stays stock, which in this case means a 3.8-liter turbo and a single electric motor joining efforts for 916 PS (903 hp / 674 kW) and 978 Nm (721 lb-ft) of torque. The original coupe – which you can see in the enclosed video – lets you launch it in 2.8 seconds and doesn’t hit its speed ceiling until 350 km/h (217 mph). Only 375 units was made.
