New Mercedes S-Class lands in Europe

After launching the seventh, W223 generation of the S-Class in 2020, Mercedes-Benz has finally refreshed it now with “over 50% new parts,” according to the designers. Let’s dive in.

The exterior design may not have changed as much as we expected (or wanted) it to, but it’s still markedly different from the previous iteration. “Digital” headlamps with tri-point star LEDs inside, matching taillights and a bulky radiator grille encased in a chrome bezel do sum up for a rather fresh, if controversial look. Mercedes claims clients can order their vehicles finished in any of the 150+ available colors.

Opting for the top trim unlocks an AMG Line package that includes more aggressively styled bumpers, side sill extensions and a special set of 21-inch wheels.

The interior is dominated by the latest version of the automaker’s MBUX infotainment system residing on three displays at once. A multi-function steering wheel with physical buttons on the spokes and a pair of wireless phone chargers are now included as standard. Paying extra unlocks touchscreens for the rear row occupants, a 39-speaker audio system and more than 400 interior trim color combos.

In its flagship version, the S 580 e, the new S-Class now pushes healthy 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. The power upgrade enables it to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds, but limits all-electric range to just 103 kilometers (64 miles).

Those looking for a more sustainable alternative will be interested in the S 450 e with its 3.0-liter inline-six engine and 22-kWh battery pack. It churns out 435 PS (429 hp / 320 kW) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque, hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds. On the upside, you get 118 km (73 miles) of range per charge.

Arguably the most interesting version of the new S-Class comes under the name S 580 4Matic. It uses a hybridized twin-turbo V8 to push 537 PS (530 hp / 395 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. If that’s too much S-Class for you, entry-level gas and diesel variants continue to be available, too.

Ordering is already available in Europe starting just above €121,000.
