Ultra-rare Plymouth Hemi Cuda could go for seven digits

Mecum Auctions will be holding a sale in Florida in January dedicated, among other things, to a rather valuable-looking 1971 Plymouth Barracuda convertible. The listing claims only five units like this were made.

An important thing to note here is that by itself, the Barracuda is in no way an exotic or luxury vehicle. If you count all these coupes and convertibles made in 1971 with all possible engine and transmission combos, there will be around 16,500 units in total (see video). However, only 114 of those came equipped with a naturally aspirated 426ci (7.0-liter) Hemi V8 rated at 425 PS (420 hp / 314 kW). Out of those 114, only five were ordered with automatic transmission. And while the coupe was vastly more popular, the example on sale is a soft-top convertible.

The listing mentions that the last complete restoration was 22 years ago. The car lacks a fully documented history, and its real mileage cannot be confirmed, either.

Autoevolution adds that a similarly specced Hemi Cuda droptop with a manual gearbox was bid to a ridiculous $4,800,000 before the sale fell through four years ago. A coupe with the same drivetrain changed hands for $455,000 this fall. Seeing how wildly different the pricing has been so far, we suppose it will be collectors who will decide how much this particular example is worth.
