Porsche Taycan flagship secretly gains performance in an update

Porsche has discreetly updated the dynamic performance characteristics of the Taycan Turbo S throughout its production period, Car&Driver suddenly found out during a recent acceleration test. The German carmaker never mentioned it, but the 2023MY electric sedan hit 150 mph (241 km/h) a whole second faster than the earlier model.

Specifically, the car reached the speed mentioned above in 14.2 seconds, down from the originally promised (and measured) 15.2 seconds. It has also managed to run its quarter-mile test in 10.3 seconds instead of 10.5. Accelerating from zero to 90 miles per hour (145 km/h) took it 0.2 seconds less than last year, and sprinting to 120 mph (193 km/h) took 0.5 seconds less.

According to the test driver crew, the most likely reason for the improvement is an optimized Overboost feature. The original Taycan Turbo S could only afford to fire up its dual motors to their fullest potential of 761 PS (750 hp / 560 kW) for three seconds straight. It then went into safe mode to prevent the drivetrain from overheating. After extensive real-world testing of this feature, Porsche engineers were ultimately able to find a way to keep it working for 10 seconds straight instead of 3. Perhaps this is what caused the 2023MY Taycan to be so much faster than the original.

Porsche has not commented on this discovery yet. It appears that the newer Taycan models received this boost in one of their planned over-the-air updates.
