Honda North America will be recalling 1,693,199 Honda and Acura-badged vehicles soon, some of them made this year. All affected examples may have a steering flaw that can pose a problem on the road, Automotive News reports quoting NHTSA.
The specific issue lies in improperly assembled reduction gear. Due a to manufacturing error, its components may generate excess friction on contact, making the wheel a bit too unresponsive for fast steering. It may even get stuck for brief periods, creating a dangerous situation.
The automaker admitted amassing over 10,000 potentially related warranty claims by now. In turn, NHTSA reports 13 potentially linked road accidents. Honda reckons that only around 1% of all cars being recalled actually have this manufacturing defect, but will nonetheless want to re-check every example delivered so far, just to be sure.
The campaign concerns most Acura Integra, Honda Civic (including Type R), CR-V and HR-V units made over the past two years, regardless of powertrain type and other specs. The older examples are unaffected.
