VW Group developing a one-size-fits-all platform

VW Group’s New Auto development strategy details the priorities of the corporation for the next decade and mentions a shift towards a single, versatile automobile architecture.

Successful implementation of the strategy should raise profit margins from the current 7-8 percent to 8-9 percent, despite the increasing share of EVs in the offer. The company expects near-100% electrification of its vehicle range by the year 2040.

As for the new tech platform, it is called the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) and comes as a replacement for five traditional platforms: MLB/MQB/MSB (internal combustion) and MEB/PPE (electric). Once implemented, the company intends to produce over 40,000,000 cars on SSP underpinnings.

The flexible architecture will exist in four main versions called SSP 1, SSP 2, SSP 3 and SSP n. These are currently being designed by the VW Technology Centre in Wolfsburg, which has already received €800,000,000 in investment.

According to VW Group CEO Herbert Diess, the corporation confidently strides towards global leadership on the EV market. Autonomous cars are the next big priority on the list.
