Huawei’s Taycan impostor goes on preorder in China

Shangjie, an electric vehicle brand founded in China by SAIC Group and Huawei, has opened its preorder books for a new EV called the Z7. It will ship in sedan and wagon forms with either one or two e-motors at the wheels.

On the exterior side of things, the tech-laden Chinese car does its best to mimic the Porsche Taycan. From the technical perspective, though, it shares its underpinnings with the company’s first production vehicle, the Shangjie H5 crossover.

The estate/wagon version of the Z7 is listed as “Z7T”, but the two are largely identical in terms of equipment and even size. To be specific, both are 5,036 mm (196.7 inches) long, 1,976 mm (77.2 inches) wide and 1,456 mm (56.9 inches) tall with 3 meters (117.2 inches) between the axles.

A peek inside reveals a slightly squared three-spoke steering wheel, a couple of standalone displays on the front panel and a shelf for the front passenger. The display in the middle can be tucked into the panel or oriented towards the driver or the passenger.

In its most basic form, the Shangjie Z7 (and Z7T) relies on a single rear-axle electric motor with 359 PS (354 hp / 264 kW). The top spec adds a front motor for 590 PS (582 hp / 434 kW) total. Batteries come in 81 and 100 kWh sizes, with the latter manufacturer-rated at 905 km (562 miles) of range.

On the tech front, buyers can look forward to air suspension, semi-autonomous driving and a host of ADAS features traditionally provided by Huawei.

Prices in China will begin from roughly 230,000 Yuan ($33,370) for the sedan, the company reckons. The wagon will pack a 10,000-Yuan ($1,450) premium. Exact pricing details remain to be revealed.
