Smart unveils its largest concept car so far, envisioned as a production SUV

The Smart Concept #1 is a design study meant to get us acquainted with the marque’s new style, but it is also a prototype of a real mass-market car coming up in a few years.

The Concept #1 is the marque’s first vehicle designed from scratch after its shift to all-electric car production. It is 4,290 mm (167.7 inches) long, 1,910 mm (74.6 inches) wide and 1,698 (66.3 inches) mm tall, making it the largest Smart on record. It is nearly a meter (3.1 ft.) longer than the ForFour and only 120 mm (4.7”) shorter than the Mercedes GLA.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz, the prototype lacks a b-pillar, so its rear doors open against the direction of the traffic. It also features a body kit, a contrast-rich roof, and quasi-floating c-pillars. Slim headlights have animated lighting modes.

The interior is made for four passengers, but the company says the production car will have enough room for five. The concept is also notably lacking a dashboard, which will be added later. The central display measures 12.8 inches across.
