TomTom brings an autonomous car to the IAA 2019

TomTom, a satellite navigator manufacturer headquartered in Netherlands, will soon be unveiling its own, proprietary self-driving system.

The show car is a Volvo XC90, and the manufacturer claims it features an SAE Level 4 self-driving system that enables it to go fully autonomous as long as there are clear road markings, traffic signs and other means of orientation.

The car sports a stereoscopic video camera, a radar and eight laser rangefinders that continually monitor the situation around the car and feed it into the on-board sat-nav system.

TomTom points out that its painstakingly precise maps improve self-driving performance drastically. Needless to say, the map database can be updated in real time.

TomTom claims its system can be implemented in a wide range of cars.
