2021 Ford Territory EV for China expands battery range, cuts prices

Ford has announced the 2021-model-year version of its battery-powered Territory crossover for China. The update brings along a battery size boost from 49.14 to 60.4 kilowatt-hours, extending NEDC-rated range from 360 to 435 kilometers.

The car also comes with a somewhat friendlier price tag now: the entry spec starts from 179,800 Yuan (currently $26,550 USD), and the top spec is only 192,800 Yuan ($28,475). Earlier retail prices amounted to 182,800 and 223,000 Yuan, respectively ($26,995 – $32,930).

The powertrain is represented by a single BorgWarner eDM unit that incorporates an electric motor (163 hp / 120 kW, 280 Nm / 207 lb-ft), the transmission and the electronic system. Getting to 100 km/h now takes 9.5 seconds, and the top speed is capped at 150 km/h (93 mph).

You can tell the battery-packing Territory from its gas-guzzling counterpart thanks to a front grille with a sparse hexagonal pattern, C-shaped daytime running lights integrated in the front bumper, and different wheels. The exhaust pipes are also missing, replaced by brake lights. Inside, there is a single-reduction gear selector instead of the common stick, and the trim is rather lavish with perforated leather, polished metal and carbon fiber used throughout.

The update makes climate control 40% more power-efficient, and customers can use their smartphones as digital key fobs.

Whether the EV will ever become available outside of China remains unknown. The gas-powered Ford Territory (see video) entered South America last summer.
