Hyundai Staria van goes hybrid on the domestic market

Hyundai has expanded the powertrain lineup for its Staria van introduced three years ago. Customers in South Korea may now buy it with a 1.6-liter turbo engine as a part of a hybrid system. Both the passenger and the commercial versions of the van are supported.

The new powertrain combines 180 PS (178 hp / 132 kW) coming from the main engine with 73 PS (72 hp / 54 kW) contributed by the electric motor. Individually, they are capable of 265 and 304 Nm of torque (195 and 224 lb-ft, respectively). When used together in hybrid mode, they output up to 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW) and 367 Nm (271 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels.

The manufacturer has yet to reveal the battery options and their respective ranges, but it is already official that the van is a mild hybrid with no charger support.

Buyers can choose between 3 and 5 seats for the commercial/cargo van version and between 9 and 11 seats for the passenger van.

The new Staria looks the same on the outside, but is better equipped in its base trim. Among other things, it takes advantage of an updated smart key fob, features a sliding floor section for convenient loading, has new USB charging ports and LED lighting all around. The doors open more smoothly than in the standard version.

Prices on the domestic market start from 34.33 million Korean Won. The old 2.2-liter turbo diesel good for 177 PS (175 hp / 130 kW) and 3.5-liter petrol V6 obtainable in multiple variants rated up to 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) are still available, too.
