Hyundai Tucson nearly fails the moose test

Spanish car reviewers have put the latest 2021 Hyundai Tucson PHEV through a series of evasion tests where the car is supposed to dodge a sudden obstacle in the road and continue moving within its lane. It did not go well.

An AWD version of the SUV fitted with adaptive shock absorbers was chosen for the test. Its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine works in conjunction with an electric motor for 230 PS (227 hp / 169 kW) total.

The last time the car performed successfully was at 71 km/h (44 miles per hour). Faster tests saw the front wheels losing grip and the traffic cones getting kicked over en masse.

The result puts Tucson at the bottom of the SUV ranking, with even the Renault Captur being able to pass the moose test at 75 km/h (46.6 mph). The Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia e-Niro and Mazda CX-30 are also ahead at 74 km/h (46 mph).

Volkswagen Tiguan and the Subaru Forester hybrid are the current best moose test performers in the crossover utility vehicle segment with successful evasion at 77 km/h (47.8 mph) and below.
