Mercedes-Benz recalls 160k+ cars in the USA

Mercedes-Benz has begun a large-scale recall campaign in the United States that encompasses dozens of passenger cars and modifications, as well as some Sprinter and Metris/Vito vans. A faulty fuel pump installed in more than 160,000 units may break, increasing the risk of a road accident.

Apparently, one of the components of the pump is manufactured from a material not wholly compliant with the safety requirements. Over time, the impeller wheel may become deformed and start scratching against the pump housing, leading to an emergency pump shutdown and a sudden loss of torque.

The recall encompasses 143,551 light passenger cars assembled from summer 2021 to autumn 2022. The list includes various C-, E- and G-Class models, GLC, GLE, Maybach S-Class and GLS, and some AMG sports cars.

Owners of Sprinter and Metris vans assembled between spring 2021 and December 2022 will also need to visit a service station. All 20,500 affected vans will have their pumps replaced free of charge.

The company emphasizes that the issue arose from a third-party vendor deviating from the generally accepted manufacturing process.
