Nio announces its bulkiest SUV EV yet

Nio has patented a model named ES9 in China. It looks like a luxury SUV sized almost the same as the latest Cadillac Escalade. If it reaches dealerships in a few months, it will officially become China’s largest EV on the market.

The certification sheet says it is 5,365 mm (209.6 inches) long, 2,029 mm (79.3 inches) wide and 1,870 mm (73 inches) tall with 3,250 mm (127 inches) between the axles. For comparison, Nio’s former flagship – the ES8 – is around 100 mm (4 inches) shorter.

Design-wise, the newcomer doesn’t look that different from the ES8 (see video). Only one powertrain has been patented for it so far, a dual-motor setup rated at 707 PS (697 hp / 520 kW). A 102-kWh battery pack is also specified. The Nio ES8 uses the same pack to get up to 635 km (395 miles) per charge, but the ES9 could prove too powerful or heavy for that range. On the plus side, Nio promises a rapid battery swap feature that will enable owners to get 100% charge in 180 seconds.
