Panasonic announces superior batteries for Tesla

The Japanese tech giant and Tesla battery supplies is working on a new type of batteries for electric cars, Reuters reports. The innovative cells are said to hold 25% more power per unit of volume.

The technology should be market-ready in a few years, the company claims. The most important thing about the design is that it is anode-free. Rather than using a preinstalled anode and degrade capacity, the company allows the battery to grow its own anode formation during the initial charging. Panasonic reckons it should result in “world-class” energy storage capacity for EVs.

In practical terms, it means that the entry-level Tesla Model Y will be able to cover an extra 145 kilometers (90 miles) per charge, the company says. As an alternative, automakers will have the option to keep the range unchanged while making the whole car a lot lighter.

Power cell research is in full swing worldwide as scientists are trying to find superior ways to store energy. To name just one example, China-based Svolt Energy introduced a battery pack called Fengxing Short Blade at the beginning of the year. Despite its compact dimensions, it could go from zero to 80% in eight and a half minutes.
